The Bahamas national regatta was held for the first time in the year 1954 by a group of American and Bahamian yachtsmen. The event was launched because sailing was being observed to have been diminishing from the active scene and was with an unsure future. With the launching of the regatta, an opportunity for the cruising yachtsmen was created to see the working fleets sailing and to simultaneously introduce these people to grand grounds for sailing around the Bahamas islands.

So, at the Elizabeth harbor, 3 days of boat racing was held in which 70 exquisite Bahamian vessels took part. As the event was a great success, it became an annual feature of the Bahamas.

The people travel from across the world to attend this Bahamas national regatta owing to the incredible nature of the Bahamian vessels used in the boat races. As these vessels are strictly constructed in the traditional ways using wood for the decks, hulls and the spars and canvas for the sails, the Bahamas national regatta becomes all the more interesting to watch. The excitement is multifold also because no instruments or winches are used to row the boats.

Once the Bahamas national regatta begins, the crowds go mad with excitement and fun. The entire event is immensely boisterous and energetic. After the Bahamas national regatta is over, there is a lot of celebration in the regatta park. There are feisty “junkanoo” parades and band performance of the Nassau police that entertains the crowd.
